Keep in mind that the elderly and the very young can have weak or compromised immune systems and should be evaluated in our office for most ailments.  Most healthy individuals can fight colds and flu on their own with the help of OTC (over the counter) medications.  We recommend decongestants for stuffy heads and antihistamines for sneezing, watery eyes and clear runny noses to improve some or all of your symtpoms.  Pain relievers such as Tylenol or Advil and Motrin work great for body aches and to reduce fever.  Warm salt water gargles might be yucky to some, but actually are great sore throat relievers.  Of course, rest and plenty of fluids as well as chicken soup is not just an old wives tale.  When your symptoms persist longer than one week, you should then make an appoinment to be evaluated.  No one likes to suffer, but treating your symptoms with OTC methods and giving your body a chance to fight off the virus is the right thing to do in most cases.  Good handwashing is a must, always.
